Targetting abatement of 1800 tonnes of energy-related emissions (CO2) in a New Zealand hospital by 2030

The Climate Change Response (Zero-Carbon) Amendment Act 2019 provides a framework by which New Zealand’s businesses can develop and implement clear and stable climate change policies that contribute to the global effort under the Paris Agreement to limit the global average temperature increase to 1.5° Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Introduced by the New Zealand Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority, EECA, the Energy Transition Accelerator (ETA) is a program to endorse the country’s largest businesses to make technically and economically viable investment decisions toward the achievement of their low carbon future. From March to July 2020, we developed the programme and delivered it to a large hospital that has committed to halving its emissions in 2030 compared with 2016 and becoming zero-carbon before 2050. The total energy-related emission (from gas and electricity) from buildings is currently 2,600 tonnes of CO2. We assisted the client with understanding its energy-related activities, identifying 64 opportunities to reduce the 1800 tonnes of emissions, and strategising its pathway to achieve the targets of the low-carbon journey. The main decarbonisation options will be due to the change in process/fuel from gas to electricity. The general strategy starts with low-cost/no-cost measures to reduce the emissions for the assets nearing the end of their life or where they can be integrated into planned equipment and infrastructure projects.
